How Make Video Marketing Work for Your Business

Many online entrepreneurs ignore the power of video marketing and video SEO as a tool because they believe it’s either too expensive or too complicated.  Maybe you believe that the skills required to make great video ads are genetic traits.   The truth is you don’t have to be a Spielberg to make great videos.  Best of all, you can make professional video ads for your business using tools that are 100% free.

What I’m going to share with you is a method for making polished video presentations with a few powerful, free tools.

Prezi – Like PowerPoint…Just Better and Free

The best tool in my video arsenal is Prezi, an online software application that allows you to create presentations similar to PowerPoint.  The difference with Prezi is that instead of working with slides, you build your presentation on an “art board.”

When creating a presentation in Prezi, you simply upload the images you want to use then add text and shapes.  The images, text and shapes can then be “framed.”  This creates a focal point for the Prezi camera.  The frames are then connected using the path tool to emphasize text and images via pan and zoom and create transitions from one frame to the next.

This approach creates a greater sense of movement than what can be achieved with PowerPoint and creates a more cinematic experience for the viewer.

Prezi has an incredibly intuitive interface that’s easy to learn and use.  Positioning, scaling and rotating images and text is all done with the click and drag of your mouse.  There are a variety of built-in templates for creating presentations that are a great starting point but don’t be afraid to start with a blank canvas and let inspiration be your guide.

The basic edition of Prezi is free and should be all you’ll ever need to create stunning presentations for your business.  There is a small Prezi brand watermark in the lower left hand corner of presentations made with the free edition of Prezi.  If it’s a bother, you can remove it by purchasing the $59/year subscription but the logo is hardly noticeable.

Adding Narration and Music

A picture may worth a thousand words, but adding sound to your presentation is a must.  Write a script to convey your marketing message and then find some suitable music to play in the background.  You can find a large catalog of free music online at sites like  Be sure to pay attention to the creative commons licensing and be only use those tracks that are licensed for commercial use.

To edit the audio tracks together, you can use a free audio editing software tool called Audacity which can record your voice through your built-in PC microphone.  Good quality audio is important, so if you don’t like the sound you’re getting from the built-in mic then consider buying a decent computer microphone.

Once you’ve recorded your narration, you can add the music track in Audacity and export the tracks to an .mp3 file format.

Converting Your Prezi to Video with Audio

Your Prezi can’t be uploaded to YouTube or other video sharing sites without being converted to an accepted video file format.  In order to do this you will need to use screen capture software.  There are a variety of free screen capture applications available that will output to .avi, .wmv or .mp4 file formats accepted by YouTube.

To convert the Prezi you will use the screen capture software to record the Prezi as it plays along with the audio file you recorded using Audacity.   While there are plenty of free options out there for screen capture, I prefer an inexpensive tool from TechSmith called SnagIt.  It’s $49.95, but you can use it free for 30 days.  That’s plenty of time to make tons of video ads.

The Process Step-by-Step

Here’s the steps one more time:

  1. Create a presentation using Prezi.
  2. Record your narration track and add background music using Audacity.
  3. Play the full screen Prezi presentation and narration mp3 at the same time and capture with SnagIt or CamStudio as an mp4 file.
  4. Upload to your YouTube channel and other video sharing sites.

Blogs are in! Blogs are omnipresent! Blogs are the future of the ‘net! All true but what is a blog… and how do you profit from it?

Purists may offer a different definition (purists usually do)… but to me, the complete capitalist, a blog is and always will be about one thing: making money. Every day. All the time.

Let me say this another way because for far too many people blogs are an unbridled (and correspondingly horrifying) excess of vanity, self-gratification, arrogance, not to mention an avalanche of incredibly boring stuff and Things You Don’t Want To Know. Yes,  too many smart people use them as a cheap form of venting and therapy.

But (my recommendations in hand) you won’t. You’ll stay forever focused on the main chance: using your blog to generate prospect leads… and make money. Now… dig in. I am about to deliver an embarrass du choix  for big blog bucks.

Train your readers to be responsive

Blogs for BusinessCreative Commons License Brett L. via Compfight If you intend to use your blog to make money, you must train your readers to be responsive. Otherwise, you will dramatically curtail and limit your responses (and blog profits)… which is the exact opposite of what you want.

The Internet is, at its best,  the best interactive tool in the galaxy. But what if readers don’t understand that? Why, then, mon frere, you must remind them of their duty… you must remind them that yours is a fully interactive endeavor and that the responsibility of EVERY reader is – to respond. Ensuring this result is your #1 objective.

A blog is NOT a standard newspaper or magazine… as readers must be told and trained to use.

Consider the case of your morning newspaper. It is packed with articles. How many do you respond to? Silly question, right? Periodical readers, except on the occasions they have  a bee in their bonnets and write a Letter to the Editor, never respond to articles. They just read ’em.

But a blog is essentially different. You want to bring articles and information of interest and importance to your readers; you want them to respond. In other words, blog content should trigger a continuing stream of reader commentary… and help build knowledge about these readers as well as build the relationships that deliver business effortlessly.

Establish a confidential tone from the get-go

Your readers (whether they ever say so or not) will read your blog (as opposed to a million others) because you give them interesting copy that the rest of the world cannot deliver. It’s not just that Enquiring Minds Want To Know: it’s that these minds want to know things they cannot easily get anywhere else.

Thus your tone is everything: let the reader know that yours is a fresh, new, entirely compelling voice. The more you let them know that yours is an “insider” place, a locale of smart commentary delivered with wit, insight, good humor and progressive outlook, the better.

Always use the second person — YOU! —  in your blog content

Blogs are the most person-centered of media. Thus, you must always speak to your readers in the second person, that is with an explicit or implied “you” (the blog reader). This will immediately establish the right tone… and the right focus.  Your readers must understand that you are writing to them, for them.

Whenever possible, too, use your blog as a means to speak to individual readers BY NAME, just like Ann Landers, the famous “gossip” columnist used to do, with such devices as “Special for Lola Mae in Seattle.” You should regard each issue as incomplete that does not address some pertinent, personal comment to at least one reader by name.

Share (select) personal data and reflections about yourself

Remember, blogs are, by definition, personal. That means you should share (some) personal information with your readers; asking them to share (some) personal data with you.

This policy, while establishing stronger and more enduring links with your readers, also has in it the seeds of embarrassment,discomfort, even disaster. Reason? It’s easy to put things in your blog about yourself which are too personal, too intimate. And by the same token, your readers might share such things with you, for publication.

Actung! Cuidado! Beware! Think long and hard before you publish. Once you hit the send key, your thought and candid revelation belong to the world.

Ask especially for reader comment on all articles you publish

Blogs - Why Aren't You Blogging for Business? The articles you publish in your blog may be, of course, on any subject you regard as significant. But blogs by business people should be about how to run such a business with such-and-such products for maximum profit. In other words, if you’re selling automobiles… blog articles (“content”) should be germaine to this topic, above all.

As you publish such articles, ask readers to comment. As comments come in be sure to use (and then later reuse) them. What people say in reference to your blog content is worthy of publication… and your comment.

Make sure that you request responding readers to include complete name, business name (where appropriate), email address, and phone. Remember, reader comments are not so much about the substance of the comment, as they are about getting the reader to respond, tell  you what interests her, and provide complete follow-up details. Follow up blog comments and responses at once

What more business? Following these steps ensures you will get a steady stream of the best prospect leads in the world… from people who already “know” you (or at least think they do), are interested in what you offer, and have provided you with complete follow-up details.

Thus, pick up the phone and call readers (now prospects) who respond to you… unless, of course, you have been the smartest cookie, given them your phone, and advised them to CALL you.

The telephone, you see, is essential for making your blog profitable for you. You must say and constantly reiterate the need to call you, as Jeanette McDonald sang, “I am calling you……………. will you answer true…….? Get the picture?

Face it. Blogs are here to stay. People love ’em. Thus, the real question is: will you do the necessary to ensure that the time and money you invest in  your blog pays off? To ensure that it does, implement these recommendations ASP… if not  sooner. Then blog your way to profits that increase as fast as your list.

We could all do with a little help online from time to time so today I thought I’d share some of my Internet Marketing Resources with our readers.
I committed 26 of my Internet marketing resources to a PDF and aptly titled it ‘The A2Z of Cool Internet Marketing Resources, Websites and Apps” so it was easy to share and syndicate on document sharing sites like
You can find it below and download it for future reference, embed it in your website or read it directly from the page.
Incidently, using the and/or similar sites, is a great way to repackage and position your content, spread your messages, build links back to your site and drive new traffic to your website.
If you have old content of PDF’s on your hard drive you can quickly get them up online and get them working for you at next to no cost.
Remember to use your keywords in the title and in the keyword field then away you go, no description to write or like videos, long upload times.

In less than 24 hours our shared document was seen almost 200 times (see above) on Slideshare alone. We actually uploaded it to a further 20 similar document sharing sites like scribd and docstoc but there is no way of telling how many times it has been downloaded or embedded into other sites without paying for the Pro version of the service on Slideshare.

OK, it’s been a while since I wrote my last blog post or even anything Local SEO related. There are reasons for that, and I’ll come to them shortly.

I have just read my New Years message from last year and got to thinking so much has changed in the Local SEO field, but at the same time nothing has really changed at all. We have just celebrated the Chinese New Year for 2555 here in Bangkok so I thought it was about time I got my skates on and my pen out!

So while the western world economy continues to stumble along, out here in Asia where I’m writing from, the economy is still growing despite natural disasters and the like.

After living and working on client Local SEO from Bangkok for nearly a year now, I really noticed how far behind business are here with their online presence. I can’t quote figures but very few local businesses have websites here, yet alone claimed there Google Place page. Believe me trying to check out a restaurant online is sometime next to impossible (it’s a tough life I lead!) There’s definitely a huge opportunity for web design companies here.

What the area lacks in websites, can’t be said for smartphones and iPads. You can’t move around Siam Square or on the Skytrain for them. Marketing for this young upwardly mobile population is the way to go! (This is only my opinion based on observations in Bangkok and other metropolitan areas. I would love to see some figures too, believe me!)

Local SEO is hotting up in the West

Last year we saw some radical changes from Google that saw some websites disappearing from the face of the earth. It’s safe to say that content is still King. Writing unique, quality content for your website or blog and posting on a regular basis should still be the foundation of your local SEO. The competition amongst local business all competing for the top spots on Google is getting fierce. We’ve seen all manner of dodgy tricks employed by some SEO companies trying to get there clients to the number position in SERP’s. Download Google’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization here.

The best advice I could give to any local business website owner would be to ensure you have great Local SEO content on your site, update regularly and be social. Yes it takes a little time, but it’s time worth investing in your company and your customers that will pay off for years to come. Don’t look for the quick fix, employing a SEO company to build you 4000 backlinks. Get the basics right on your site first and then engage with your prospects and customer using Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Foursquare. No one is more passionate and knowledgeable about your business than you! Spend 20 minutes each morning updating these social networks, answering questions and leaving comments. You can do this while enjoying a refreshing cup of tea, you may even enjoy it and you will definitely start to enjoy the benefits it brings to your business as it grows and you get to know your customers and vice-versa.

Encourage, cajole or incentivize your customers to use your products and services instead of your competitors:

1) Use ‘check in’ with Facebook Places. Each time your customers checks in to your business, they will broadcast your business and location to all their friends. Instant viral marketing at it’s finest!

2) Make a ‘special’ for Foursquare so you can be easily found by all those mobile young things looking for a 2-4-1 offer at lunch or ‘exclusive happy hour’ from 6pm. Remember it only takes a few minutes a day. You see tea is good for you… and your business!

3) Claim your Google Place Page and complete it fully with your business name, address and telephone number. Then add more information about your company and a coupon to drive traffic to your site or physical location.

Local SEO Going Mobile

2012 will see mobile marketing come to the fore. Ensure your website is mobile friendly and you are using video to market your business and get multiple listings for your business on the first page of searches. Everyone has a smartphone now days and can view the web from just about anywhere. The trick is to make sure it’s your website, your google place and your videos that are getting views. Better still start using a text messaging service to send SMS directly to your customers. Having a slow night at your restaurant? Ping! You just sent a text message to all your customers informing them of ” today’s special offer’ you’ll never have a slow night again!

–        Submitting the unique page’s URL to search engines via XML Sitemaps (basically a file with a list of up to 50,000 URLs in)

This means the content that these sites own can now be crawled and indexed by major search engines more easily.  So for example, when someone types ‘Plumber in London’ in Google then links to pages owned by the business directories that match this search entry have the potential to be displayed in Google’s search results.

The obvious benefit of this process is that the person looking for a business or service can land on an advert without knowing about that site or searching in it directly.

So Does This Mean I Should Advertise On All Business Directories?

Absolutely Not – basically like a lot of other free advertising services on the Internet, there are varying levels of quality and service.  A few years ago it was a popular SEO strategy to list your business on as many sites as you could, in order to gain links to your site.  However, this strategy has changed recently and even more so since the Google Panda updates earlier this year (changes to Google’s search in the pursuit of displaying quality results and relevancy) – so now it’s important to only associate your business website with quality and trusted free advertising services.

In this post we are going to be looking at Search Engines or rather we are going to be looking at an easy way to notify them of any changes you’ve made to your website or blog. I mean, why wait for the search engines to ‘crawl’ your site when you can notify them by pinging your blog?

To notify the search engines of the new changes to your website or blog you need to ‘Ping’ them.

Basically a Ping is a push button way to say to the search engine ‘Hey! Look over here, we’re new, relevant and we have something you should take a look at!’

The best way to do that if you have a WordPress blog is to cut and paste the following WordPress ping list of over 25 ping services into your WordPress Blog Update Services Field.

We’ve also made a short video literally showing you ‘over my shoulder’ the exact steps you need to take to do this.

Add Your Your WordPress Ping List to Your Blog

Your WordPress Blog Update Services Field can be found by accessing your WordPress Admin Dashboard or backend. Scoll down the page and search the left hand side column until you find: Settings > Writing > Update Services Field.

Cut and paste the WordPress ping list from above and then hit the save button. Next time you make a change to your blog or publish a new post or page to your website, it will automatically ‘ping’ it to all the search engines allowing greater visibility for your site.

When you publish a new post, WordPress automatically notifies the Ping site update services. (Pingomatic is the only service set by default).

For more about this, see Update Services on the Codex. Remember to separate multiple service URLs with line breaks or commas.

A Word of Warning! – Don’t manually ping your blog without making changes or updates to it as this can be seen by the search engines as spammy and black hat. Once is enough when you make an update and this will be automatic so, it’s literally set and forget!

The search engine love to see relevant and regularly updated blogs, so now is the time to take action! You now know what a Ping is, you have a WordPress Ping list and know the importance of why you should Ping your blog, so post a new article today!

If we scroll down the Google Places page a little further we notice another prominent ‘Write a Review‘ button (Fig 3. What do Google want us to do?) but this is where the story takes a sudden twist.


The Change in Local Search Listings post Google Places Changes

Google used to pull in reviews from third party review sites like Yelp, Qype and Local.Yahoo and feature them quite heavily. Now they have all gone except for a couple of nondescript links at the foot of the page. (Fig 4. Indicated by my 4th and final arrow ; )

Some say that Google built Google Places scraping review content from third party sites using an unfair advantage but now, as ‘Google Places‘ has enough content of it’s own they can stand alone and no longer need the 3rd party support. Google couldn’t have built this service without the 3rd parties and have now abandoned them. Whether this was ethical or morally right or wrong is another debate but they have now changed their policy.

One other thing to note is that you may have had 100’s of reviews on your Google Places page only to see that number now reduced to just a handful as the 3rd party reviews are no longer being counted. We are still investigating how this has effected rankings and place positions. Also take into consideration that only gmail account holders can write reviews on Google Places.

I’m currently beta testing Google + and wouldn’t be surprised if Google Places features in this new social phenomenon in the near future. So what does all this mean to your business listing on Google Places and your position in Local Search?

How to Tweet to The Number One Spot

Here is a screen shot of BlendLSM (that’s Blend Local Search Marketing on twitter). We made the number 1 position for the keyword ‘Namecheap’. Namecheap for those who don’t know are a domain name company, a very good one in our books, but this is irrelevant in this post. But if you want to take advantage of their huge discounts, click here! : )

I received an email from Namecheap informing me of their huge price reductions, up to 59% off domain names. I tweeted this out to our followers on twitter as I thought it was relevant to them and hey, we all like to save a few dollars, right! (and make a few affiliate commissions lol)

As you can see in the screen shot, BlendLSM achieved a number 1 position for the keyword Namecheap with a single tweet. Out of interest, my business partner Lee sent me this screen shot from Oslo, Norway, I’m in Bangkok Thailand.

So What Does This Mean?

So it seems that Google are placing some weight to real time searches. What the recency v’s relevancy ratio’s are is anybodies guess. How long it stayed there at number 1 is unknown too. ( I wasn’t going to sit up all night refreshing the page)

I tried to repeat the listing later and only managed a number 10 spot on page 1 (still incredible) but again how long it stayed there is still open to question. This screen shot was taken from a computer in Bangkok.

It does seem that twitter conversations predict Google searches and influence the traditional news media. Remember how stories of the tsunami in Japan spread across the world – twitter or the demise of Osama bin Laden was revealed to the world more than an hour before President Obama’s address from the White house – twitter.

So What Can We Take From This?

While we can’t predict the news it demonstrates that Google are putting huge emphasis on breaking stories. So keep tweeting regularly, always put your keywords in your tweets and look our for breaking stories either from world/local news or a hot new offer from your favorite band or brand. By making your tweet relevant to these breaking stories you could expose your twitter to millions of potential new followers.

Of course we can discuss ‘Competitor Analysis’ and ‘Reverse Engineering’ but that is a another post entirely. Today we are going to look at the benefits of using targeted keywords and how to find the very ones your prospects are typing into search engines to find you.

Google are the biggest search engine in the world with over 60% of the market share. They also provide email services such as gmail, social networks like buzz, local search profiles – Google Places and analyitics tools to track the traffic on your website or blog.

They also have what is known as Adwords – Google Keyword Tool that allow you so view and analyize data to find the volumes, cost and location of keywords or tags that people use to search for anything and everything online.

As we know, next no-one uses Yellow Pages anymore and besides you would never get this kind of analyitical information from thumbing through the big yellow book. (80% of searches are now done online)

The Keyword Tool is an invaluable tool when setting up a website, starting a PPC (pay per click) Adwords campaign or snooping on your competitors. And the best thing is… it’s free.

There are other similar tools out there, some free and some you have to pay a monthly service or buy some software. It’s good to use 2 or 3 of these to dig deep and crunch the data when you start to get more serious about your Internet Marketing. For now however, Google Keyword Tool is a great place to start.
