FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 11, 2015
I have used website SEO for my application development business site to make it rank much better over the last year, especially in my local area of Cleveland, Ohio USA. I implemented a number of strategies including keyword research for competitive and relevant search terms, appropriate keyword density per page, keywords in the title tag, minimal use of headers and a naturally conversant style of page content with just a few keywords included. These are all appropriate onsite optimization techniques or what they call “white hat” SEO. But what about the bad practices aka “black hat” SEO. I would like to discuss some counterproductive site optimization techniques that you should always steer clear of. They can get you “red flagged” if not banned from the search indexes. If your URL isn’t visible anymore, then that defeats the purpose of even having a website to begin with.
“A flash website” can be visually stunning, but it won’t get you very far with the search engines. They are crawling your site in search of text that will assist them with configuring your search rank. Takeaway – a picture is not worth a thousand words to a search engine, so don’t bother with this one.
“Cloaking” means designing your website so the search engines see one version and visitors see another. A word to the wise – don’t!
“Doorway pages” are highly optimized for one topic, but then redirect you to another page containing unrelated content after you click on one from the SERPs. Hint – no one likes to be tricked and that includes the search engines.
“Duplicated content” is another problem area with regard to article syndication. This is less risky and may not even carry an outright penalty. However, this can lower the ranking of the page in your site. In other words, your page that contains the article that has been syndicated on other sites now has less leverage with the search engines since it is not unique. Google, Bing and Yahoo prefer unique content.
“Hidden text” is a big no-no. The search engines will wise up to this very quickly and you could find yourself in search rank hot water.
“Keyword stuffing” is a big red flag that can get you in real trouble with the search engines. I have heard that a keyword density of more than 10% is considered to be keyword stuffing. This can get you penalized or even banned from the search indexes.
“Swap links” are also called reciprocal linking and they are one of the oldest tricks in the book. They are also very easy for the search engines to detect, so don’t waste your time here. Swap links represent a form of barter to the search engines. They want to see one way back links to your site, because this is more indicative of an endorsement of your website.
“Use of session ids in web pages” will do a very good job of creating confusion among the search engines. If the web crawler sees one session id in your web page now and a different session id when it reaches it later on, then it thinks it has found two different pages on the same site. Neither version will be ranked and further, your website will be perceived as unstable. Search engine web crawlers like to see static pages when they reach your site.
There are other boo-boos I could mention here, but I think you get the idea from what was discussed. Search engines are designed to reward those who contribute substance to the internet. Keep this in mind when you orchestrate your SEO and you will be fine. Please be sure to also visit my website to learn more about my computer repair services.

Bad SEO Practices You Need To Always Avoid
In May of 2012 Google had 11.3 Billion explicit searches – up 3% (Comscore) It’s be reported by Google that 20 percent of all searches across its properties are of local intent. And not surprisingly that figure jumps up to 40 percent when we’re talking about searches from mobile devices.
What is more interesting to note is that 60% of local searches that take place on Google result in a sale. So now more than ever, it is clear to see customers are searching online and buying offline and if your business isn’t found in the top 3 places in Google search results you are missing out on huge profits now and in the future.
Elizabeth is a busy working mom. She is looking to have her daughters teeth straightened and wants to find a local orthodontist. Will she:
a) Take here daughter out of school and drive around to 3 or 4 orthodontists to ‘check them out’ and have a free consultation. Along the way incurring fuel and parking costs and the loss of time from both school and work.
b) Search Google for an Orthodontist. View the top 3 websites, watch their videos, read their reviews, check them out on Facebook and schedule an initial consultation. All from the comfort from her home or office while enjoying a nice cup of tea.
Of course option b) wins every time.
Giovanni and his friends want to find a sports bar to watch the big game. Do they:
a) Walk aimlessly around the streets asking for directions and recommendations and miss the first half…
b) Take out the smartphones and search on Google for sports bar in their current location. They also check out foursquare for local deals and discover a sports bar nearby that has a 2-4-1 offer on bottled beer during the big game.
Again option b) wins every time and Giovanni and his friends enjoy their beers and the game while the bar owner is raking in healthy profits from his new found customers.
You customers are out there looking for your products and services online and from the mobile devices and if you’re not on page 1 of Google in the top three positions you are missing out on huge profits every single day.
– Firstly you need to claim your Google+ Local listing (formerly Google Maps and Google Places) and complete the page with your business name, address and contact details, opening times, method of payment, photos and videos.
– Secondly you need to have a website and ensure it is optimized for the keywords people are typing into Google to find your products and services.
– Thirdly you need to have a search engine optimization strategy that Google likes and will reward you with higher results on its pages.
– And fourthly you will need to get more social on the web on sites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Foursquare and Pinterest.
When you take action and consistent interaction you will start seeing results in your business as more customers find you a whole lot easier.

Can Local Businesses Afford Not To Be in The Google Top 3 Search Results?
I have just read my New Years message from last year and got to thinking so much has changed in the Local SEO field, but at the same time nothing has really changed at all. We have just celebrated the Chinese New Year for 2555 here in Bangkok so I thought it was about time I got my skates on and my pen out!
So while the western world economy continues to stumble along, out here in Asia where I’m writing from, the economy is still growing despite natural disasters and the like.
After living and working on client Local SEO from Bangkok for nearly a year now, I really noticed how far behind business are here with their online presence. I can’t quote figures but very few local businesses have websites here, yet alone claimed there Google Place page. Believe me trying to check out a restaurant online is sometime next to impossible (it’s a tough life I lead!) There’s definitely a huge opportunity for web design companies here.
What the area lacks in websites, can’t be said for smartphones and iPads. You can’t move around Siam Square or on the Skytrain for them. Marketing for this young upwardly mobile population is the way to go! (This is only my opinion based on observations in Bangkok and other metropolitan areas. I would love to see some figures too, believe me!)
Last year we saw some radical changes from Google that saw some websites disappearing from the face of the earth. It’s safe to say that content is still King. Writing unique, quality content for your website or blog and posting on a regular basis should still be the foundation of your local SEO. The competition amongst local business all competing for the top spots on Google is getting fierce. We’ve seen all manner of dodgy tricks employed by some SEO companies trying to get there clients to the number position in SERP’s. Download Google’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization here.
The best advice I could give to any local business website owner would be to ensure you have great Local SEO content on your site, update regularly and be social. Yes it takes a little time, but it’s time worth investing in your company and your customers that will pay off for years to come. Don’t look for the quick fix, employing a SEO company to build you 4000 backlinks. Get the basics right on your site first and then engage with your prospects and customer using Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Foursquare. No one is more passionate and knowledgeable about your business than you! Spend 20 minutes each morning updating these social networks, answering questions and leaving comments. You can do this while enjoying a refreshing cup of tea, you may even enjoy it and you will definitely start to enjoy the benefits it brings to your business as it grows and you get to know your customers and vice-versa.
Encourage, cajole or incentivize your customers to use your products and services instead of your competitors:
1) Use ‘check in’ with Facebook Places. Each time your customers checks in to your business, they will broadcast your business and location to all their friends. Instant viral marketing at it’s finest!
2) Make a ‘special’ for Foursquare so you can be easily found by all those mobile young things looking for a 2-4-1 offer at lunch or ‘exclusive happy hour’ from 6pm. Remember it only takes a few minutes a day. You see tea is good for you… and your business!
3) Claim your Google Place Page and complete it fully with your business name, address and telephone number. Then add more information about your company and a coupon to drive traffic to your site or physical location.
2012 will see mobile marketing come to the fore. Ensure your website is mobile friendly and you are using video to market your business and get multiple listings for your business on the first page of searches. Everyone has a smartphone now days and can view the web from just about anywhere. The trick is to make sure it’s your website, your google place and your videos that are getting views. Better still start using a text messaging service to send SMS directly to your customers. Having a slow night at your restaurant? Ping! You just sent a text message to all your customers informing them of ” today’s special offer’ you’ll never have a slow night again!
We believe in this low cost, direct marketing so much we will shortly be announcing our own SMS service for the UK market. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for the forthcoming announcement and launch.
So, I said I would let you into the secret why I haven’t posted for a while at the beginning of this article. Well, I’ve been working 13 – 16 hour days on a number of projects to help even more local businesses succeed online and to ultimately get more customers and more profits. Not only are we launching our SMS Marketing Service in the very near future but we will also be announcing our own membership site.
I’ve been in the fortunate position where I have been able to mentor a number of people in the fine arts of local SEO over the last year or so. I’ve seen the positive transformation this has had on them personally and in their businesses and naturally wanted to take it to the next level and share my knowledge with others who want to take action and create a better life for themselves and their families, it’s very rewarding. So at Blend Local Search Marketing we have been quietly but diligently, building a membership site and breaking down all our proven local SEO strategies into easy to follow guides. These will be available in written, audio and video formats. It’s taking longer than we anticipated but we are perfectionists and really want to over deliver, so our members really can benefit from them and see results fast. There will also be a forum in the members area so like minded business owners can network with us and each other. We are adding our amazing inventory of resources designed to save you hours of your time everyday. Again check back here or on our Facebook Page for the big announcement.
And if you thought two major projects wasn’t enough… we have a 3rd! We will also be announcing the 1st Blend Online Business Marketing Awards in the very near future but it’s all a bit hush-hush at the moment. And a 4th – our Free 30 page information packed online resource ebook will shortly hit viral bookshelves. Register here for an advanced copy with ebook as the subject line.
In the second half of the year we will also be announcing our exclusive Local SEO training seminars. These will be week long events for a small select group of marketing managers and business owners, to join us at one of the most exclusive hotels and resorts in Thailand to get our personal Local SEO training and mentoring. Our exclusive guest will also enjoy our business breakfasts, golf at some of the regions most desirable clubs, use of the resorts catamaran, 7 swimming pools and all the floodlit tennis courts and award winning spa facilities. You will enjoy 5 star treatment from when you land at Thailand’s International Airport until you have to leave (you may not want too!) To register your interest leave your details here with Seminar in the subject line.
So in summary I would like to say lets stop listening to all the stories of doom and gloom, stop living in fear, fear is corrosive and leads to failure! Now is the time to take a positive outlook on life and your business, it’s time to stand up and take action. 2012 is the year to be connected and be social.
My crack Local SEO team and I would love to help you in anyway we can.
Your thought, comments and questions are welcome.
See you around soon,
Local SEO in 2012
I am fortunate enough to be able to do a lot of of traveling and I also spend a considerable amount of time online but it always surprises me when I find a business that doesn’t have a website. After all, online is where customers are searching for products and services and a website is your shop window to the world.
I, like most people, ran a company many years ago and I wanted to get my business seen online and needed a website building. I didn’t know anything about DNS, HTML, PHP, CSS, Style Sheets and all the other coding scripts and tech babble so I bought ‘Building a Website for Dummies’.
I struggled to get my head around the simplest of ideas and I could see this was going to take a forever to figure out and build a functional and good looking website. Time I didn’t have as I was running a business. I wasn’t a designer or a coder.
A long story short, a friend built me a websites instead. All well and good but I often wanted to change or add new content to my site. This was expensive and I couldn’t always get hold of him so the updates were not very timely.
This I found very frustrating but made me determined to find a solution to my problem. I knew there was a way of being in control of my own site and business. What I needed was to have the ability to update my website as often as I wanted and do so without breaking the bank. That’s when I discovered WordPress. If you’ve had similar experiences read on…
WordPress is an open source web blog, meaning literally thousands of people and companies contribute to developing the style and functionality of the code and do so continually.
No 2 WordPress’s are ever be the same as there are thousands of designs, widgets, plugins and themes to mix and match. They are totally customizable and incredibly search engine and design friendly. They really are the perfect fusion between, design, functionality and SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
You can have a free WordPress and host it on their platform or a self hosting wordpress giving you unlimited functionality. To self host your WordPress (it’s what I would recommend) all you need to do is purchase a domain name from a domain name company like Namecheap. (more about domain names and web hosting in future posts) Once you have your domain name for example: www.mywordpress.com you need to host it somewhere. Never purchase a domain name and host it with the same company. It’s like having all your eggs in one basket!
I highly recommend Hostgator as the hosting company for your domain. They have round the clock customer service that is second to none and dozens of fantastic training videos. So if you want to learn how to carry out just about any task on your website by literally watching over someone’s shoulder, you can start/pause and teach yourself very easily using these video tutorials. Hostgator are also committed to providing greener solutions for their servers. With their certified Renewable Energy Credits (REC’s) in wind power, HostGator is not just neutralizing their environmental impact, they’re actually reversing it. So by hosting your website with them you’ll be making a positive impact on the environment too.
You will need to point the DNS (Domain Name Servers) to your servers and wait for it to propergate. When this is done (it can take a few minutes or up to a day) look for the Fantastico DeLuxe logo or Hostgator’s WordPress Quickinstall in your control panel. Click on one of the logos and follow the easy instruction and in less than a minute you will have a live WordPress blog style website. Now all you need to do is customize it for your business and optimize it for the search engines. (More about how to do this in future posts)
It really is that easy, I mean if I can do it just about anybody can! And as I say, there are excellent training videos showing you how to do it, each and every simple step of the way.
